The International Human Right Commission (IHRC) has honoured Geoffery Onyeama, Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs as its ‘Human Right Champion’ for his relentless efforts in the protection of Nigerians in diaspora and the fight against COVID-19.
The presentation ceremony which was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja, is a reflection of Onyeama’s commitment, hardwork and dedication towards the actualization of President Buhari’s diplomatic policy.
Speaking during the award ceremony, Amb. Onyeama, expressed his profound gratitude to the IHRC team for finding him worthy to be a recipient of such recognition, and also for its donation of free medical face masks to Nigerians .
The Foreign Affairs Minister who attributed the award to the vision of the President Buhari led administration to protect and safeguard the well-being of Nigerians; noted that “the Ministry will continue to carry out Mr. President’s directives of ‘citizen’s diplomacy’, which is to protect the interest of Nigerians everywhere in the world”.
The Minister also used the opportunity to recognise the Nigerian embassies and consulates around the world for their tireless efforts in fasttracking the evacuation of Nigerians, especially during the pandemic. Ambassador Friday Sanni, Head of Office, International Human Right Commission in Nigeria while presenting the award, appreciated the Honourable Minister for his strong leadership prowess that has seen him rank among the best Foreign Ministers that the country has ever produced.
Dr Sani also called on the Foreign Minister to re-engineer the Ministry’s legal department to work with the Federal Ministry of Justice to speed up court cases and the repatriation of foreign nationals who might have committed one offence or the other to avoid putting the country in bad light.
