H.E. António Guterres, the ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations has had more than 3 decades’ career in government and public service, where he has played leading roles in social development, guided by a mantra that sums up as the promotion of human dignity for all.
A politician by vocation, Mr.Guterres joined the Socialist Party in Portugal in 1974, and was elected to the Portuguese Parliament in 1976 where he served as a member until 1993. In 1995 he was elected Prime Minister of Portugal, during which among many successes, he also played a key role in the international effort to resolve the crisis in East Timor (Timor Leste).
Prior to his appointment as UN Secretary-General, he served as United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees from 2005 to 2015, heading the humanitarian organisation during some of the most serious displacement crises in decades.
Following his formal election by the United Nations General Assembly elections in 2016, H.E. AntónioGuterres became the ninth UN Secretary-General. Since taking office, he has worked to promote peace, combat hatred, harness ambition in tackling the global climate emergency and the Covid-19 pandemic, achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and reforming the institution.
Having recently been appointed for a second term by a voting season of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr.Guterres secures 5 more years to realise priorities such as equity and human rights for all, that stand at the core of his efforts as UN Secretary-General.
