To underscore the strategic role of Nigerians in Diaspora towards the development of Nigerian economy, President Muhammadu Buhari has made a renewed passionate call on Nigerians in Diaspora to actively participate in the country’s economic recovery effort as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President while speaking at the virtual celebration in this year’s Diaspora Day event tagged “Leverage the Diaspora Resources for National Development” commended the support and contributions of Nigerians abroad to the socio-economic development of the country.
He also highlighted the economic contribution of Nigerians living abroad saying, “Over the past three years, Nigerians in diaspora had brought in over $25 billion as home remittances to the Nigeria’s economy annually through official and non-formal channels”. He therefore called on all Nigerians abroad not to abandon their country of origin, but be active contributors to Nigeria Post COVID -19 economic recovery efforts.
Amb.Zubairu Dada, Minister of State, Foreign Affairs in his remark stressed the importance of engaging with Nigerians in Diaspora at the state, national and international levels in advocating the Diaspora potentials in the post-COVID-19 economic recovery effort.
The Minister further appreciated members of the Diaspora who have donated to the COVID-19 response, especially those that reached out to the grassroots through the States.
While highlighting the significance of the event, Hon. AbikeDabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM attributed the success recorded by the agency in the past one year to passion and consistency. She also announced that her agency is currently working with the National Assembly in making Diaspora voting during upcoming elections a reality.
The Nigerian Diaspora Day celebration was initiated to facilitate networking among the Nigerians in Diaspora and the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, the State Governments, the Diaspora State Focal Point Officers and other Private and Civil Society Organization participants in the implementation of a practical framework for the effective engagement of those in Diaspora for national development.
