To further address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has donated one million dollars to support the Nigerian’s government effort.

The donation which was recently made through the “One UN COVID-19 Response Basket Fund” becomes the latest donation made by The Bill Gate Foundation towards supporting Nigeria’s fight against COVID-19.

Mohamed Yahya, UN Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Nigeria while commending the foundation, noted that the aim of the fund was to support the country’s response in the management of the COVID-19 crisis and the realities of post COVID-19 crisis, particularly in the protection of vulnerable persons.

He further stated that the unfolding COVID-19 situation in Nigeria has called for solidarity and coordinated support to the response plan of the country.

While highlighting the impact of the Basket Fund on Nigeria’s COVID-19 fight, the UNDP Resident Representative said,  “Through the Basket Fund, the UN aims to ensure policy coherence, programmatic alignment, harmonization, and coordination of support to the Government of Nigeria during the time of crisis.’’

It might be recalled that the UN, in collaboration with the Nigerian government, launched the One UN COVID-19 Response Basket Fund earlier in the year, to serve as the sole COVID-19 Financing and Investment Platform, through which different stakeholders can channel their financial support to the multi-sectoral efforts of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 Response.
